As my friends talk and relive their golf experiences, my thoughts return to my experience, which would never take me back to any golf course.
Although, I always thought and relished in the idea of being the perfect Secretary, going on and above the call of duty, one particular boss comes to mind. As the fall gathering of local Optometrists approached, the plans included a golf tournament. As my boss was not a golfer and fear of not being able to meet her commitment without shame, I agreed to participate with her in taking a crash course of 6 lessons to make us both professional golfers.
Our instructor was a wonderful golfer, so he inferred and who were we to disagree, after all neither of us had ever been on a golf course. We watched in amazement how he handled his club and with sheer determination we tried to follow his example in position and the gripping of the club. After the first lesson we were asked to bring a club to the next lesson. On a limited budget, I went to a Sports Store that sold second-hand material and feeling confident that after this purchase and when I really improved, would purchase a better quality club, but settled on a really nice one with a reasonable cost of $2.50.
At the next lesson with my new club in hand and anxious to show him my purchase, I confidently walked up to the instructor and being very proud of my purchase, informed him that I had just what I needed and it cost only Two Fifty. He reached into his golf bag and produced a bright shiny club and stated “this had cost him $700.00”. As I had previously quoted “Two Fifty”, he thought $250.00, but in order to correct the wrong message, I said no “$2.50”.
Needless to say, he was not impressed and by now, had actually given up with any instructions. For our last and final lesson, we were invited to watch him hit the golf ball with vigorous blows, to which we applauded his efforts with “Ohs” and “ahs”, as the golf ball tore through the sky. To complete our golf lessons we received a tour of the golf course in his golf cart. NEVER TO RETURN.
